Carbon Reduction & Circular Solutions

Achieving a circular economy requires ambitious action and a shift in the way we produce, consume, and recycle materials.

Working towards a clear goal

We have set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2030. We will achieve this by reducing our absolute emissions in scopes 1 and 2 by 70% and reducing our relative emissions in scope 3 by 70% based on business growth. We will compensate for any residual emissions.

To work actively towards these goals we have developed a carbon reduction action plan centered around three key areas; Sites and travel, Logistics, and Products:

Laerdal Circular Model

A key aspect of our overall sustainability ambition is to develop more circular solutions. We have developed a Laerdal Circular Model which guides us towards our desired circular state in each stage of our business, from production, transportation, materials in our products, and the use model of our solutions.

Raw materials

In terms of raw materials, we aim to minimize inputs by utilizing more circular and digital solutions. We prioritize the use of recycled and refurbished materials. Additionally, we strive to incorporate bio-based materials to reduce environmental impact and support a regenerative approach.

Product development

In product development, we focus on creating solutions that have a significant impact on saving lives while optimizing sustainability. We emphasize digital and circular solutions and design for sustainability. Our ZeroAim tool helps guide more sustainable choices throughout the product development process, including low-carbon material input, reduction of unnecessary materials, and design for refurbishment and recyclability.

Regarding manufacturing, both internal and external, we are working towards achieving net-zero sites powered by renewable energy sources. By 2025, we aim to achieve net-zero emissions for our own sites. We also collaborate with suppliers to reduce their operational emissions and prioritize partnerships with those who produce goods and services efficiently using renewable energy.

In logistics, we focus on selecting shipping partners that offer low-carbon solutions and strive to optimize routes, minimize air freight, and transition to electrified transportation modes.

Sales and user models

We believe in optimizing our impact through digitization and dematerialization in our sales and user models. By providing more circular models, we can increase reach while using fewer physical materials.

Our services are enhanced through cloud-based support, allowing for improved digital solutions, communication, and maintenance. This enables us to facilitate more digital and circular solutions and reduce the need for travel.

Residual waste

To minimize waste, we prioritize waste reduction in our solutions' production, use phase, and end-of-life. Our aim is to create circular solutions that do not have end-of-life, designing them for recycling, refurbishment, and implementing take-back schemes.

Recycling is integral to our approach, and we design our solutions with recycling in mind. We also recycle production scrap internally and collaborate with recycling partners to further our recycling efforts.
